Last year I participated in the bowl-a-thon because I believe in every woman's right to make her own reproductive decision regardless of financial considerations-- and that is what the Carolina Abortion Fund is all about. This year I have gotten more involved. I am on the Board and have been taking calls on our direct intake line. While we put over 95% of contributions towards direct assistance to women in need of funding for abortion services, we are only able to fund apx 5% of the women that call for help.
I have literally hung up our hot line in tears after telling yet another woman who has no money and is in desperate need of help that we can not help her. I'm in tears but I can't imagine what she is going through. For these women putting food on the table is hard enough, dealing with the cost of an abortion is back breaking. I am angry that this situation exists in our country. There is such a wide gap between what people need and what they receive. But thankfully there is so much that we can do. I am proud of what you and I and everyone who has already helped the women of North Carolina have done, but there is much left to do.
We fund women based on need at a rate of up to $100 for 1st trimester services and up to $300 for 2nd trimester services. If we actually were able to fund every woman that called we would operate on an annual budget of over $350,000. Our budget this year was barely $18,000. We have been fighting to raise money and provide assistance the best that we can and we are 95% short of what our current demand calls for.
